In the time of the Kaiser, the Admiral of the Fleet, Albert Wilhelm Heinrich, Prince of Prussia (1862-1929) wore this type of captains hat, and this style later found a new dignified wearer in Helmut Schmidt. From this time on they were also known as Schmidt caps.
